Men's Silk Damask Waistcoat
Dates from the 1840's, made out of silk
while the back
is made out of cotton. Fasten's up the front with removable gold buttons
which could be taken off for washing or changing as fashions changed.
The chest measures 42", the waist 38" but has lacing
at the back, with whalebone edging the grommets as a remnant from a time when men wore corsets to give them a military stance. The sides had been let out and basted together, possibly the start of a renovation that never got finished. (Formerly L. Hidic)
