Printed Challis Day Dress
C.1846. Pale green wool challis dress with roller printed motif in graduated shades of red, green, yellow and blue. Lined throughout in fine white cotton, bodice fashionably fan-pleated and with low set armholes.
The full sleeves are unusual; they're a hangover from the 1830's, while the rest of the dress is extremely up to date. Dome-shaped skirt with gathered waist, hooks together down the back. Inside the dress, at the lowest point
of the bodice
, is a brass ring which appears to be for fastening to the stays to keep the bodice down and straight. (From the Daniel Milford-Cottam collection)
