RARE 1930
C. 1930's. An absolutely stunning TRAINED dressing robe made from peachy pink buttery soft silk ENCRUSTED with handworked floral cotton lace. I was lucky enough to acquire one ladies complete underwear trousseau from the 1930's which was lovingly packed away in an old vintage suitcase all these years. The lady's daughter said that her mother used to buy her fabrics from France and have the underwear made up elsewhere, sometime by nuns! Please see my other listings for the rest of the gorgeous items from this lady's trousseau and prepare to be dazzled!
Words cannot describe the beauty of this robe and it is one that I am tempted to keep myself as it fits me too!! It crosses over at the front and fastens with silk ties. I think my favorite aspect of this robe are the wonderful LONG kimono style slit sleeves which have floral cotton lace all along the edges. The fabric on this robe is wonderful, it has so much movement to it and shimmers in the light. I just LOVE it an you will to!
The robe is in very good- excellent condition. The only faults being the odd tiny pin head sized age spot which is typical of natural content fabrics and some REALLY, REALLY FAINT very light brown age spots at the bottom front of the robe (the panel which lies underneath when the robe is fastened up. The fabric at the underarms has some "rubbing" to the weave for lack of a better word from light use (the robe does not look like it was worn very much). It is not worn out and does not have perspiration staining. I also found a little 1/4" hole in the lace at the right front side lapel. (see photo five). As you can see from the photos, none of the faults mentioned detract from the look of the gown! The robe is completely handsewn with minute stitches and comes with it's original muslin envelope cover.
You will need to be tall to wear this as it cannot be hemmed due to the lace at the hem and the long sleeves. I am 5'9" and this trains at the back on me with the front hem just brushing the top of the floor. The robe is hard to measure as depending on how tight or loose you have the ties tied, it will fit a variety of sizes. It is however, too big for my 35" bust dress form that it is shown on. I have a 38" bust, 30" waist and 38" hips and this fits me perfectly when the ties are tied the smallest but can fit up to a 42"/44" bust, 34" waist and hips up to 44". It is quite narrow across the back though with shoulders measuring 16" (my shoulders are 16" and this fits me fine though). Front length from shoulder to hem is 56", Back length is approx. 70", Sleeve length is 34".
